The second issue comes out tomorrow and, from what can be glanced at, in the preview, Peter David keeps the trend set forth in the first issue: a good character, humor and… nope, that's it.
This is a clear step up from his latest arachnid assignment (Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man), but it still falls short of what he did, in volume one, with Miguel O'Hara. The problem isn't mischaracterization, this is his baby after all, but the setting for the story. He's swapped the 2099 environment, for one that, even if proven more popular (we'll see about that), wasn't in his original design, and it shows. I have a grudge with the female character in particular, the super is as uninteresting as he could muster, and Liz Allan (or the character passing up for her, this days) just doesn't work as the psycho mastermind they're trying to sell.
Will Sliney's artwork also leaves something to be desired, more precisely, his inks do. I'd like to see him inked by someone else.

Finally! I was wondering what happened to that series. I liked the first issue a lot and the fact that Peter David is the writer makes me like it even more.
Though I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree in terms of liking the first issue.
Anyhow, I'm looking forward to issue 2.

Can't wait until tomorrow, looking forward to it. Hopefully, I'll continue to enjoy the direction that Peter David is going with it.

Yep. Though haven't had chance to read it yet. I did have a quick read of ASM 5 though but had to rush that. Been a busy day today. I'll read it when I go to bed later.
Any good?

As it was the case with the first issue, yes. There's some good and some bad to be found. Peter David is probably the most inconsistent writer I've followed.
The good, the robbery at the beginning and the story Miguel makes up to get out of trouble, at the end.
The bad, the female interest and that old joke, about telling the truth, because you know nobody will believe you. This has been seen almost as much, as the cranky girl character, who has a reason to be that way, so she's actually complex and interesting (I'm trying to be sarcastic here).
Because you were asking about Spider-Man 2099, right?

Well, the love interest is out of the picture in issue three, that must be the highlight. On the down side, we get Miguel sent to one of those third world imaginary countries, I never saw the reason for. Also, the "hero against all odds" from the end of the comic, is something I've seen so many time over the years, that it no longer does much for me. I do like Tiberius, he must be one of the biggest weasels in the Marvel Universe.

Tiberius was going to sell Spider Slayers to the government that the government was going to use on the rebels of his country. It was a decent issue IMO. Not much happens in it that's really rememberful (if that's a word lol. If not what's the correct spelling?)

I think you're going for "memorable" And it would've been way cooler, if Tiberius were to sell the Spider-Slayers to Bashar al-Asad, to fight against ISIS. Now, that is real fun.

Issue four. If PAD is going to start with that character growth nonsense, I'll have to drop the book. Tiberius learning a life lesson and doing the decent thing? This isn't the bastard we've come to know and love.
The Scorpion firing laser beams isn't much of a novelty, he's been able to fire blasts of some kind (electro-magnetic) since June, 1981.

I'm guessing Tiberius is going to end up being the bastard in the end lol.

So far, I haven't been enjoying the Spider-Verse (*) mega event so much, but when it lands on a weaker title, it actually does some good. The presence of an ominous menace, is a step up from mysterious time-travellers, terminally ill love interests, bank robbers and third world dictators.
About the art. This must be the first time I see Rick Leonardi (the character's co-creator) colored with current methodology. Yeah, it's been a while. Can't say it particularly suits his stile, but he's a welcome change from William Sliney's regular penciling.
* Technically, we've been dealing with the "Edge" of Spider-Verse up to this point. I guess it'll become the fully fledged Spider-Verse, once the action comes to earth 616 or to the ASM title.

Back to 2099, and what a difference it makes! It's quite clear PAD feels at home here, and the characters he created some 20 years ago are much more appealing, than the ones we had previously been dealing with. On the other hand, we loose Leonardi on the pencils, it would've been nice to keep him a little while longer. The humor was typical PAD, Miguel acts like he you would expect, and Daemos finds himself in much more trouble, than he bargained for. Gabe's "just in case" weapon proves pretty effective, not to mention the trap Miguel and Tyler set up for Daemos. About that, I hope we see Stone's own motivations, for so easily accepting Miguel's petition. In any case: "Welcome to Alchemax, Daemos" indeed. I liked the flirting between Gabriel and Lady Spider, totally in character for the skirt chaser and not that strange, for someone who's being hunted. I didn't like the casual way in which they get rid of six-armed Spidey. I know, I should be used by now, but I expected better from PAD. BTW, why did he bother carrying a mask? is not like he could have a secret identity
