I kept hearing good things about this series, so I gave it a try and, guess what, it is good. At least if you keep to the issues written by Nick Spencer and drawn by Steve Lieber. The fill-in issues aren't bad either, and do a reasonable job at imitating the atmosphere, but they're not the same (#7, 10 & 11). I'd give issues 1-6, 8. 9 and 12-14 a rate of 6/10, which would place them in the Top 100 list, if they were Spider-Man comics. This is a book which strives in humor, bordering parody, very much in the tradition of what Giffen made so successful in the 80's, but syntactically updated with elements introduced by manga, and with a penchant for the bizarre, absent in Giffen's work. I mean, Silvermane's head mounted in a toy car? If you like the idea, this is a series you definitely have to check out.

You should be able to buy the entire run shortly. Sadly, is being canceled with issue 17. A nice Christmas self-present, don't you think?

I see Panini also holds the rights to the character in the UK, curious. I wonder if the story, behind the acquisition of the rights, was as colorful as in Spain.

Couldn't tell you Panni as far as i know has had the rights for over 13 years and i don't know the story with Spain

They also got the rights about ten years ago, in Spain, with no small amount of backstabbing involved.

Only two issues left, and the plot is in high gear. A difficult task, for Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber, to wrap up all the loose ends, in just 40 pages. At least, fill-in time is over, and issue 15 was one of the best ones yet (not that we've seen a bad one). A really gag-packed comic, with almost no stale moment. The "recap" of the last page, is probably the only panel guilty of lenience, honestly. Probably haven't had that much cover-to-cover fun, since the first issue.

The penultimate issue hasn't been all that satisfying. It does indeed look like they're rushing things, due to the axe having fallen on the title. In particular, the change of appearance of a certain character, is a strange explanation as to how it can be a way to avoid a beating. I'm still expecting for them to resolve that in the last issue. I have a theory involving Mach-VII, let's see if they go that route.
I loved Tony's cameo.

Indeed they did! It wasn't really much of a spotting on my part, either, as reflected by the fact that it gets "spoiled" in the recap before the episode begins, without waiting for the actual explanation, which takes place only a couple of pages later.
My other fear for this final issue, was the rushing of things necessary, in order to tie up all the loose ends (and there was no shortage of those). Spencer and Lieber were perfectly aware of the problem, and use a first person narrative to disguise it. The result is a very compact reading which doesn't suffer from the overabundance of details. Quite an elegant solution, all things considered.
There's one point I'm not clear about, the "Mirage situation". If someone can offer some light into that…
In essence, it was a good ending, for a good series. Let's all shed a tear, for this bunch of lovable bastards.
