Osborn wasn't alway the evil mastermind we have come to know and hate, in the last 20 years. The original version of the character depicted a ruthless, successful business man. We only saw hints of genius, whenever he concocted a new weapon for his bag of tricks. His very origin as the Green Goblin was due to an accident, when he was trying to follow Stromm's formula, which he couldn't understand. He claimed to have turned smarter because of the accident, when in fact he only turned mad.
With all this, I'm trying to say that there was no need to bring him back, if the idea was to change him into a different character, The only two good things that ever came out of his returning, were Ellis's Thunderbolts and Millar's Marvel Knights.

Yeah, Norman is an interesting character. It's kind of ironic that he set out to do evil and accidentally did good! I have no more than a passing knowledge of the Thunderbolts, but from what I've gathered, Norman basically wanted them to put on a façade of being heroes but wanted to use them for his own nefarious purposes, but they actually ended up being heroes and doing good and serendipitously made Norman look good in the process! How ironic!
I think about the development of Rogaine. Originally it was meant to be a drug to control cholesterol, but it didn't work. However they found that test subjects started growing hair! So they started off with a noble intention and ended up making a fortune off of men's vanity! Kind of the reverse of Norman's intentions!
Viagra was the same thing. It was originally developed to increase the survivability of heart attacks, but failed, but they turned around and gave old men boners (much to the dismay of their wives, I'm sure!) and made a fortune off of that!
I know all of this is tangential, but here's something that I was thinking about that could be more along the lines of Norman's warped thinking: Pink Slime! This is a beef by-product that is from a negative perspective as a waste product that the beef industry tried to use as filler for their processed beef products, unethically they tried to pull a fast one on consumers by stuff ing Pink Slime into stuff like hamburger and hot dog meat rather than just throw it out. The beef executives thought they were being slick and sly, but they got caught! What they could have done is realize that Pink Slime is nothing more that pureed beef protein, the equivalent of what you get if you through a steak in a blender! It's still nutritious but looks disgusting!
If the beef executives had a scrap of integrity, which they didn't (just like Norman) what they could have done is taken this slime, separated out all the fat, freeze-dried it or dehydrated it, ground it into a powder and sold it to body builders and health nuts as powdered animal protein for $20 a pound! It would be a very healthy product but derived from a disgusting waste product! Hell, they could have even used that fat they separated out as fuel to separate out the NEXT batch of slime! Another big irony! The sad thing is people like Norman are in epidemic proportions in our businesses and industries, trying to take the easy, unethical and dishonorable way to make a fast buck!
Oh, Norman you poor misguided slimeball!

I think Dafoe did a great job playing him in the film. I do like him as a bad guy, for me he's Spider-Man's number one villain.
